2008/09 BCHL award winners announced

The British Columbia Hockey League announced today its award winners for the 2008/09 regular season, which concluded Sunday.

A total of five awards -- MVP, Top Defenceman, Rookie of the Year, Most Sportsmanlike Player and Coach of the Year -- are presented to one individual in each of the Coastal and Interior Conferences and were chosen by coach and media voting.

The recipients of four other trophies were determined based on final statistics and standings from the 2008/09 regular season.

The award winners for each conference are below:

Most Valuable Player -- Vern Dye Memorial Trophy:

Coastal Conference: Chris Rawlings, Cowichan Valley Capitals
Interior Conference: Mark Zengerle, Salmon Arm Silverbacks

Top Defenceman:

Coastal Conference: Zack Currie, Cowichan Valley Capitals
Interior Conference: Justin Schultz, Westside Warriors

Rookie of the Year -- Bruce Allison Memorial Trophy:

Coastal Conference: Mat Bodie, Powell River Kings
Interior Conference: Garrett Milan, Penticton Vees

Most Sportsmanlike Player -- Bob Fenton Trophy:

Coastal Conference: Darcy Oakes, Powell River Kings
Interior Conference: Conor Morrison, Salmon Arm Silverbacks

Coach of the Year -- Joe Tenant Memorial Trophy:

Coastal Conference: Kent Lewis, Powell River Kings
Interior Conference: Mark Ferner, Vernon Vipers

Top Scorer -- Brett Hull Trophy:

Winner: Darcy Oakes, Powell River Kings

* Trophy awarded to the player who accumulated the highest number of regular season points

Top Goaltender:

Winner: Andrew Hammond, Vernon Vipers

* Trophy awarded to the goaltender with the lowest goals-against average with a minimum of 1000 minutes played

Top Goaltender:

Winner: Andrew Hammond and Graeme Gordon, Vernon Vipers

* Trophy awarded to the goaltending tandem whose team allows the fewest number of goals during the regular season

Chevrolet Cup:

Winner: Victoria Grizzlies

* Trophy awarded to the team that accumulates the highest number of points during the regular season
