The Surrey Eagles bounced back from a Friday loss with a big 4-1 win over the Powell River Kings at the South Surrey Arena.
The Eagles applied heavy pressure early, outshooting the Kings 15-5 in the first period. They had trouble converting, however, with only Jason Grecica beating Powell River starter Josh Watson when he converted a pass from behind the net by Richard Vanderhoek. Powell River drew even with a power play goal when Jordan Grant roofed the puck at the side of the net following a pass through the slot.
The Eagles’ fortune started to change in the second when Bradley McGowan scored low glove side on a 3-on-2, to give Surrey a lead they would never relinquish. Paul Levarsky added insurance when he came out of the penalty box to join a rush. Levarsky tipped Grant Toulmin’s shot, causing the puck to squirt past the King’s netminder but stopping short. Levarsky finished the job by poking the puck over the goal line. Andrew Wallace added an empty-netter near the end of the game.
“We wanted to make sure we’re winning these Coastal Division games,” said Eagles head coach Shane Kuss. “We did a good job, got lots of shots early. It was nice to see the pucks going in the net towards the end.”
Vinny Lessard made 30 saves for the win and was named the game’s first star. Watson took the loss after facing 33 shots.
Powell River is now idle until Friday when they travel to face the Burnaby Express, while Surrey takes on Burnaby on home ice on Wednesday night.
